The head and the heart of the human being during a change

4 September, 2020

Those who participate in strategic organizational transformations are not free from stress. Even with the great effort made to keep the change process tolerable for all those directly and indirectly involved, the effect it will have on all of them is inevitable. For some the change from their perspective will be positive but for others there will be difficult moments.

That is why we need to analyze, plan, and implement the communication and assimilation processes with great detail throughout the change. Some organizations try to show it as a win for all those impacted by the change, but in truth it is never like that. They even go so far as to generate communication and assimilation activities centered exclusively on the benefits of the change all the while ignoring the negative effects that it can have on some of the people.

We recommend being clear, precise, transparent, and opportune with communications and change assimilation activities directed at all those impacted. This should be both for those that the transformation opens welcome possibilities as ell as for those that could be negatively affected.

We should always keep in mind that as human beings we are perceptive, sensitive, intelligent, and capable of making realistic or sometimes unfounded assumptions based on the daily situations we live at work. Therefore, it is important that the organization as such lead all the communication and assimilation activities. If not, then, the information will end up being manipulated in informal settings with the almost certain possibility that what reaches the people affected by the change process becomes highly imprecise and distorted.

As human beings, even though we can be moved by our emotions, we can also be very rational as concerns things that touch us directly. Keep in mind that each person is affected differently by a transformation process. Each person is unique inasmuch as their life experience, objectives, illusions, and interests are distinct.
